Women’s Committee Hosts Successful Meet & Greet
The Local 479 Women’s Committee held its first Meet & Greet on Saturday, April 14th, at Twain’s Brewpub and Billiards in Decatur, with approximately 50 women from our local in attendance.
Featured Special Guest was International Vice President C. Faye Harper, a leader within the IA’s Women’s Committee, and great supporter of Local 479’s women.
The event was designed to be very simple, with no formal program.
Instead, members were encouraged to have fun, get to know each other, and to discuss their vision for the future of the Local 479 chapter of the Women’s Committee.
Over the course of the event there were several breakout discussions, one of which centered on the challenges that women face in a male-dominated industry; the additional level of effort required to demonstrate that women can compete and how it often seems that they must work twice as hard as the men they work alongside to earn the same respect from employers.
Before the end of the Meet & Greet the committee gathered suggestions for discussion topics to tackle at future meetings.
“I’d like to extend a great big thanks to everyone involved, including Faye and all who attended, for making our first Meet & Greet such a success. The Local 479 Women’s Committee would like to see more of our hard working tradeswomen at our next meeting. So please come on out, meet your sister members, participate in our important and informative discussions, and participate in planning of some of our future events.” – Committee Chair, Kathleen Tonkin Vazquez
