Education

Training Our Crews

Local 479 has a proud history of experienced crews mentoring its newer members, and as our local has grown we have built upon that culture of members-training-members. Today our local features an educational curriculum designed to pass along the best practices in use by technicians in a variety of specialized crafts from our industry. With dedicated training workspaces and classrooms, our local is becoming a national leader within the IATSE. Our newest members are expected to participate, while our most experienced members are encouraged to lead by example and to share their time and knowledge with the next generation.

Members in good standing who wish to enroll in any of the training classes we offer should send an email to training@iatse479.org.  Please be sure to include your full legal name and the date of the specific class(es) you wish to attend.  Please note that emails sent after business hours will be answered on the next business day during normal operating hours.

  • Understanding Overheads with Ray Brown and Wes Bailey

    Understanding Overheads

    This course is open to all experience levels

    This hands on class will focus on the building and application of the grip overhead frames.Members will learn how to build and implement the industry standard 6x6, 8x8,12x12, and 20x20 overheads. Attendees will also receive instruction on the proper knots to use and techniques on how to safely tie down the frames. Discussions will occur throughout the class in reference to the practical application of different overheads (rags) and why DP’s choose to use them.

    Tools- Speed-wrench, C-wrench, Gloves

  • "The Red Pill, or The Blue Pill"- Introduction to the Sound Department with Allen Williams

    Introduction to the Sound Department with Allen Williams

    Allen Williams will be instructing a class "The Red Pill, or The Blue Pill"  - Introduction to the Sound Department. Anyone interested in production sound at any level from Indie to the Big Budget Productions can benefit from attending.

    Topics to be covered include the roles of each member of the sound department, the goals and what the sound department is trying to achieve and how to get yourself ready to join a production sound team. This class will not go into great depth or cover reality/ENG sound.

  • MEDIC SETIQUETTE with Sarah Mullis

    MEDIC SETIQUETTE 


    This course is open to all Local 479 Medics

    This 5-hour class is designed to provide members, who are working as medics, with a broad foundation of knowledge, tips, and techniques to enhance their job performance and ability to be hired. Attendees will review general set etiquette, as well as, specific responsibilities and behavior expected of medics, including a discussion of the unique conditions that on production and off production medics will be expected to know.

    The business of the medic will be explored from negotiating with UPMs to scheduling additional safety personnel.

    Focus will be given to the variety of paperwork that medics will encounter on a normal basis, including:Call Sheet, One Liners  Injury Reports & Claims, and Workers Comp.

    A portion of the class will be spent exploring the typical responsibilities and conventional production practices for on/off-set medics, from billing of invoices to the type of medical aid that can be legally rendered based on your license, Medical Direction and Personal Liability Insurance.

    (Advanced) Qualifications to attend- 2 year working grip resume

    ClassLength- 2- 6 hour days

    This course is designed for the seasoned set and rigging grip that wish to learn more about the safe rigging and mounting of cameras. The 12 hour, 2 day course will cover the standard camera rigging equipment such as cheese plates, leveling heads, hood mounts, hostess trays, suction cups and the proper use and application of the mounts. Attendees will have a hands on experience that will include building camera mounts on a vehicle as well as learning the proper use of these tools to place a camera in a grid system.

    Tools- Full grip belts required

    There are 15 seats available for this class

Education Leadership Team

Kevin Amick

Director of Education

Kevin is a strong believer in the importance of members training members. He develops new and continuing education programs in coordination with working members, the IATSE Training Trust Fund, and other industry resources. Kevin is an active member of the ESTA Technical Standards Program, is an OSHA Outreach Instructor, and serves as a Trustee to the IATSE Training Trust Fund (TTF).

Felicia Smith

Assistant Director of Education

Felicia is the Assistant Director of Education. She works closely with the Director of Education and trainers in the development and preparation of coursework, and the set-up of classrooms and workshops to ensure the best training experience possible.

Administrative Assistant

Blue provides support to the education staff for training programs and administrative procedures.

Education Classes

Local 479’s hands-on, interactive classes expose students to all aspects of the techniques employed by the craft and provide direct access to experts in the field, from vendor reps and equipment suppliers to department heads . Note that this page features a list of classes we have offered over the past 18 months.

How to Sign Up For Classes

Signing up for a class is really quite simple –  the difficult part is requesting attendance before a class is filled. Take a moment to review these notes:

  1. Unless noted otherwise, you must be a member in good standing of Local 479 to participate in one of our classes.
  2. Check your email frequently. We often post notices on our social media outlets as well, so be sure to follow us on Facebook, but email is the most reliable way to stay up-to-date on our current classes and their availability.
  3. If you see a class that you’d like to take, contact us immediately (in the manner specified in the email or social media posting) to get your name in the queue for a spot. You will be notified via email when you have been successfully registered for a class.
  4. If you are confirmed as an attendee for a class be sure to attend on the day and time specified. If you find yourself unable to attend a class after receiving your confirmation of registration email, PLEASE notify Kevin or Ed via email or by phone at least 24 hours prior to the class, so that they may offer the spot to the next member on the waiting list.
