2017-health-fair-001

IATSE Local 479 Benefits Coordinator Lauralyn Walsh reports that this year’s Health & Wellness Day saw an increase in attendance and looks forward to even more growth for next year’s event. In addition to the screenings mentioned in this year’s announcement, the event also included specialized hearing exams and testing for prostate cancer. The remote mammogram testing team was unable to be secured due to low pre-registration by our membership, which is largely due to our membership’s age skewing younger. (more…)

A Homerun for Georgia’s Fallen Firefighters Foundation

2016-kickball-feature-001

On September 11th Local 479’s Young Workers Committee hosted its second annual Atlanta Film Community Kickball Tournament in Central Park, raising more than $26,000 for the Georgia Fallen Firefighters Foundation (gafallenfirefighters.org). Sixteen teams from across Atlanta’s production community faced off on six fields in an epic battle for first place. Team MacGyver took the top spot, earning their name on the YWC’s loving cup trophy, permanently displayed in the office for all to see.

More than $26,000 raised for the Georgia Fallen Firefighters Foundation!

The YWC selected this charity in commemoration of the sacrifice of our nation’s firefighters on the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The amount raised by the YWC and its partnering organizations and sponsors is especially significant, as the GFFF’s entire annual budget comes from donations, and since they typically only raise about $15,000 annually our contribution more than doubled their annual donations, providing them with the ability to provide enhanced support to the men and women they serve in Georgia and its neighboring states. Today marked the first official meeting of Local 479’s branch of the IATSE Young Worker’s Committee. The International started this subcommittee in 2012 to provide our young union members with a greater understanding of the responsibilities of leadership and to encourage their active participation in the IATSE. From what we’ve seen so far, Georgia’s local branch of the YWC is off to a flying start and will engage members of ALL ages in many ways, from outreach programs that benefit our local communities to fun member-only activities like the upcoming YWC kickball tournament in August. We look forward to developing a strong group of men and women to lead Local 479 long into the future!
