AFL-CIO Organizing Institute Training March 2017 Session
The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute (the “OI”) is excited to present a 3-day training program designed to help organizers with field experience take on greater responsibility for planning, leading—and winning—successful organizing campaigns. Organizing Institute training gives an intensive look at the work of a union organizer. Participants learn one-on-one communication skills, as well as campaign and strategic planning skills. More than 50 participants from different crafts and industries will travel to Atlanta from various parts of the United States and Canada to meet in Local 479’s meeting hall Friday through Sunday. Technology Showcase at Base Camp ATL
Last Saturday Local 479 participated in a technology showcase at Base Camp ATL, a movie and television production facility near the intersection of Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Thornton Road. The event was co-hosted by PRG/Paskal and provided our members with hands-on experience with a variety of new and cutting edge filmmaking technologies.
Registration opened at 7:30am and attendees were provided with breakfast. Around 9am Brian Edwards, President of PRG, welcomed attendees and introduced the representatives from the companies participating in the day’s events, including Local 479’s Business Agent Mike Akins. 30th Anniversary Celebration a Great Success
This past Saturday IATSE Local 479 finished up the year with a special holiday party designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the charter of our Local (which is officially October 1st, 1986). (more…)

Save the Date: 30th Anniversary Celebration
Local 479 Members please save space on your calendar for the evening of December 10th to join your fellow members in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the charter of IATSE Local 479. This invitation is open to all 479 members in good standing along with one guest. Festivities begin at 7:00pm and end at 11:00pm. Dress will be cocktail attire (not black tie). Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be an open bar. We will have guests from the International as well as State and local government representatives. Golf Tournament Returns in Spring
The Local 479 / Local 600 Charity Golf Tournament will be returning to its normal Spring schedule, giving you more time to practice your putting. If you’d like to get involved in helping with this event get in touch with Kathy Tonkin. More information in a few months!

Women’s Committee to Host Wellness Day
IATSE Local 479 Women’s Committee would like to extend an invitation to members and their spouses to our upcoming Wellness Day on Sunday, May 1st. This event will be open to IA members in good standing and/or their spouses. Please join us for breakfast at 9am, where there will be a variety of speakers, followed by a self-guided tour of local vendors that provide many health services in Atlanta and surrounding areas. Local food trucks will be in attendance in the afternoon. Please bring your insurance card to see what your health plan can do for you. This is a free event with a great opportunity to meet other women in the film industry!

YWC Oscars Viewing Party
Local 479’s Young Worker’s Committee has organized a social mixer for our younger members between the ages of 18 and 35. Get spiffed up and celebrate this year’s Academy Awards with us on Sunday, February 28th. Members only, more information has been sent out to members via email.

The 2015 Holiday Party
The 2015 Holiday Party took place on Saturday, December the 12th at Local 479’s new headquarters building. An enormous 50’ by 150’ tent was set up to accommodate the more than 1,000 members who elected to participate in a day of fun and fellowship. The Haunted House was a tremendous success at the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta, thanks to the amazing efforts of the IATSE members who donated their time to make it happen! Now we have to strike the house and are in need of your help! Please come to 1462 Walker Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30337 tomorrow, Sunday Nov 1, at 5:30 pm to help us! You’ll need to bring tools with you.
